Upper Makefield Township

$48,600 Grant for Streetscape Project

Phase II of the Washington Crossing Gateway Park and Streetscape Project is in the planning stages, following receipt of a $48,600 Compact Authorized Investment (CAI) grant from the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission.

With a 10% match of $5,400 from the township, the CAI grant will allow the completion of design elements eliminated during Phase I due to budget constraints. Planned improvements in Phase II include: benches, historic interpretation and educational signage, and a welcome sign.

The Capital Improvement Oversight Committee will soon begin meeting to work on Phase II.

1-Mile of Infrastructure Improvements Completed Last Year

Phase I of the Washington Crossing Gateway Project, completed in July 2009, improved the approximately 1-mile of roadway connecting the Delaware Canal, the site of Washington’s Crossing of the Delaware, a residential development, an historic village, a State Park, and BicyclePA Routes.

Infrastructure enhancements improved the area for pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular traffic. Design elements and materials for the project were selected to stay true to the historic nature of the area such as:

  • Cobblestone curbing
  • Custom brick sidewalks
  • Ornamental traffic signals
  • Period-style, pedestrian-scale lighting
